Photo trouble

I have been planning a shop update for quite a while!
I have a stock pile of vintage jewels waiting to be listed on Etsy,
but.....
I have a problem :(
My photos! I have a constant battle with my images!
I spend hours arranging,
I spend hours photographing,
I spend hours editing,
my problem- SERIOUS lighting issues!
Dark, dingy photo's every time!
I have a fairly decent camera,
I have daylight bulbs,
I have a soft box,
I have even been out doors to take my pictures,
I have fiddled around with the various light settings on my camera,
but still the same results :(
Ok, so I thought maybe IT IS my camera, but pictures of my children indoors turn out just fine.
I use Picasa to edit, the only function that I kind of like is the "fill light" but the results are not perfect, and I want perfect!
I have been thinking of investing in Corel paint shop pro??? Or some professional lighting equipment???
I need some help guys!
I need answers!
I took over a hundred pics and I ended up with two that turned out kind of ok.
 It's fair to say I'm stressed :(

Beautiful jewelry, I have the same problem, I need the sun out, but not direct sun. I always photograph in the morning. Have a wonderful week. Terri

I only use daylight - nothing else works for me but I also use the editing software that came with my camera - distortion, sharpen, auto tone correct and bright and contrast I use on almost every photo. I don't think you need Corel. I don't know if Picasa has the same settings. Do you have any software that came with the camera itself?

Hi, I feel your pain because I struggle with the same issues and that's why I don't post more jewelry on my website. Actually, your photos always look good to me. I always try to take pics outside without direct sun and use a lightbox indoors, but still I get so frustrated. I struggle with my reflection and the reflection of the camera. My camera is just OK, and I always use the manual focus setting for jewelry. Maybe it's my bad eyesight:) I use Photoshop Elements most of the time. My jewelry pics seem to always be too blue and then when I mess with adjusting the color it makes it worse. What's a gal to do? I'd be very interested in the tips you pick up...Sorry I'm not much help. Really, your jewelry always looks so pretty!

It's SO ironic ~ I can really relate because I'm at the point where I'm ready to toss my camera out the window. I've read everything I can about taking pics for the internet and I still don't quite get it. I think I need a real class with a human being I can ask questions of....I try to use natural light when I can and I also have a lightbox, but I'm like you, I take a gazillion shots to get three good ones! Wish I had some answers!

Hi, I always find myself taking 100's of pics just to get a couple of great ones. Think about how professionals do it though, you see them snapping away and then they just choose one great image to work with! Natural light for me is a must but I don't use any photo I've taken without editing it! I use GIMP which is very much like Photoshop. It has a great setting called 'white balance' and that corrects the light. There is also a white balance setting on most cameras that you might want to play with?

Your photos and pieces are lovely though, your styling is fabulous. Stick with it, practice is key!
